By Rachael Cook, Chief Executive Officer, Inclusee
I am deeply honoured to share that Inclusee has been formally accepted as a full voting member of the Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection (GILC) — a global coalition of organisations and experts committed to ending the pressing issues of loneliness and social isolation across the world. GILC
This recognition is not only a testament to the work our team has done here in Australia, but also a powerful affirmation of our mission: to use the power of connection to relieve isolation and loneliness for Australians. As a virtual community centre, Inclusee has long championed inclusive, accessible, and meaningful social engagement. Becoming part of GILC allows us to extend this vision globally, contributing to and learning from a diverse network of changemakers who share our values.
Why GILC Membership Matters
GILC is more than a network, it is a movement. With members spanning 23 countries and over 600 expert contributors, GILC is driving systemic change through advocacy, research, and policy development.
For Inclusee, this membership opens doors to international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the opportunity to shape global strategies that address social isolation not just in aged care, but across all demographics.
We are especially excited to engage with GILC’s subcommittees focused on campaigns, policy, research, and professional practice. These platforms will allow us to share our insights from working with older Australians, while also gaining new perspectives from global peers such as Silbernetz in Germany, an organisation doing remarkable work in this space. Aligning with the WHO Commission on Social Connection WHO
Our membership in GILC also aligns us with the World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Connection, which recently released its flagship report: From loneliness to social connection: charting a path to healthier societies.
This landmark document highlights the urgent need to recognise loneliness and social isolation as global public health priorities, with new estimates suggesting that loneliness contributes to over 870,000 deaths annually.
Inclusee stands ready to support the Commission’s strategic goals, from policy and research to intervention and engagement. We believe that by working together, we can scale proven solutions, advocate for inclusive policies, and ensure that social connection is treated as a fundamental determinant of health.
Celebrating Loneliness Awareness Week Australia LAW
This milestone also coincides with Loneliness Awareness Week Australia, a national initiative that invites all Australians to make #MomentsMatter — small but meaningful interactions that spark connection and help people feel seen and valued. Ending Loneliness Together Friendship Alliance
Whether it’s a compliment, a shared story, or a simple invitation, these moments are the building blocks of community. #LetsTalk
At Inclusee, we believe that connection starts with intention. Loneliness Awareness Week reminds us that everyone, from young people to older adults, deserves to feel included, supported, and understood. We are proud to stand alongside this movement and amplify its message both locally and globally.
Looking Ahead
As we step into this new chapter, I want to acknowledge the incredible team at Inclusee whose dedication and compassion have made this possible. I also extend my gratitude to the GILC Board, especially Jo Badcock and Suparna Chhibber, for their warm welcome and belief in our work.
We look forward to contributing to GILC’s mission and collaborating with the WHO Commission to build a more connected, compassionate, and resilient world.
Together, we can turn isolation into inclusion, and loneliness into lasting connection.
