Helen’s Hexies: Celebrating Creativity in Inclusee’s Sewing Club

A Hand-Stitched Quilt Inspired by Sewing Club - with Robyn

My name is Robyn, and I am the Volunteer Facilitator for the Sewing Club.

Everything we do is based on slow sewing principles, but any and all sewing is celebrated.

In Block 1 2025, I began by teaching the participants to make ½ inch hexagons using the English Paper Piecing method and scrap fabric from our craft stash. Helen, one of the participants, found it challenging to see the ½ inch hexagons, so we discussed making them 1-inch hexagons and that worked beautifully. As the weeks went by, I just kept making increasingly more hexagons until I had quite a stack of them. Now I needed to make something with them.

During my research into making hexagons, I saw a pattern being used by another quilter. I really liked the pattern and the colours used, so l emulated the design and developed it further into the final quilt design.

This quilt is called ‘Helens Hexies’ and is dedicated to her and to the other ladies in the Sewing club.

I would also like to acknowledge the encouragement and support I received from the staff and volunteers at Inclusee whilst I was making this quilt. It has taken me 14 months from start to finish and it has all been completed by hand. The only seam that has been sewn by machine joins the two pieces of backing fabric together.

Projects like Helen’s Hexies remind us that creativity can bring people together in powerful ways. Every stitch in this quilt tells a story of patience, encouragement and shared connection, and we are proud to celebrate Robyn, Helen and the Sewing Club community.
